Alan Dorin paper presentation

I finished presenting a review of three themes from the work of Alan Dorin, a researcher and artist at the Centre for Electronic Media Art at Monash University. I only had 10-15 minute to do this presentation, so I necessarily had to simplify a lot. I focused on telling a compelling story that was based on Dorin's work and shaped by my own interests.





This was the process I took to do this presentation (which I created in one all-nighter).
Ok, my process:

• Scan through all the publications I have of him
• First pass
• Speed read one publication (5 minutes max)
• Make general notes (3 minutes max)
• Go back to his website and take note of his projects and other activities that are not in the form of a publication
• Make general outline of common and recurring themes in his work
• I should make a claim about why knowing about Alan Dorin is important
• The way he talks about physical and biological processes; The way he used them
• The kinds of metaphors he uses
• Whose work as he inspired?
• Also: why focus on a single person?
• Backbone of the metacreation community (can i show why?)
• I'm trying to understand his trajectory, and I want to predict the kinds of things he might be interested in
• I should also talk about how this presentation and ym analysis of Alan Dorin's ideas are important. What I amattempting is 
• Also, present to the class his challenges to the generative art work, which I can derive from him conclusions in papers.
• My own injection of ideas
• poiesis and emergence, sure: but what about destruction? probably won't have time to add this, though, but we'll see. my primary goal is to create a coherent story about the computational sublime, emergence, etc.
• I want to present a visualization of the themes that he's covered through his papers and their evolution, for example at which point does interaction come in?
• I could structure my presentation around presenting
• key ideas of Dorin
• give an example that illustrates these ideas
• identify one of the class projects that embodies that idea
• identify a class project tat does NOT embody that idea but illustrate what would happen if we did
• I must remember to really go into at least one or two ideas in great depth
